Municipalities

Municipalities are the government entities that issue permits for construction projects. In Readybuild, you track which municipality each permit comes from to manage relationships with different jurisdictions.

What Is a Municipality?

A municipality is any local government body that issues building permits:

  • Cities
  • Counties
  • Towns
  • Townships
  • Special districts
  • Building departments

Recording Municipalities

When creating or editing a permit, enter the municipality name in the Municipality field. This is a required field that helps you:

  • Track which jurisdictions you work with frequently
  • Identify permits by their issuing authority
  • Filter and report on permits by municipality

Municipality Entry Tips

Be Consistent

Use consistent naming to make filtering and reporting accurate:

InconsistentConsistent
Denver, Denver CO, City of DenverDenver
Jefferson Co, Jeff County, JeffCoJefferson County

Include Useful Details

If you work in areas with similar municipality names, add distinguishing information:

  • "Springfield, IL" vs "Springfield, MO"
  • "Washington County, OR" vs "Washington County, PA"

Managing Municipality List

Administrators can configure a predefined list of municipalities to ensure consistent data entry. When configured, users select from the list rather than typing free-form text.

To configure municipalities: See Admin: Municipalities for setup instructions.

Finding Permits by Municipality

Filter in Permits Table

The permits table can be sorted by municipality:

  1. Click the Municipality column header
  2. Permits are sorted alphabetically by municipality

Search on Permit Board

When using a Permit Board, search for the municipality name to find all related permits.

Use Reports

The Open Permits Report shows municipality information, allowing you to identify pending permits by jurisdiction.

Working with Multiple Municipalities

Many projects require permits from multiple jurisdictions. For example, a home renovation might need:

  • City building permit
  • County electrical permit
  • HOA approval (if applicable)

Create separate permit records for each municipality to track them independently.
