Cost Detail Report

Required Permission
View Project Costs - You must have the View Project Costs permission to access this report.
Filtered Data

This report is filtered based on your division settings:

  • Function: Operational
  • Work Type: Full Project

The Cost Detail report compares what each completed project sold for with its estimated and actual cost, and sums the results for the date range: total costs, margins, losses, and how many jobs came in over or under estimate.

note

This report now requires View Project Costs, the same permission as the WIP Report. Before October 2026 it had no permission check. If someone who used it can no longer open it, an administrator can grant them that permission.

Accessing the Report

Reports > Production > Cost Detail

The report reads actual cost imported from ComputerEase, so it appears in the menu only for companies that import it.

Which Projects Are Counted

Won production projects (not change orders) whose Completion Date falls in the date range. Deleted projects, projects on deleted contacts and projects marked as non-sale are left out, as on the other production reports.

note

Before October 2026 this report also counted non-sale projects and projects on deleted contacts, so totals for earlier ranges can differ slightly from what it showed then.

Summary

FigureHow it is worked out
Total ProjectsProjects in the range
Total Sold AmountSum of each project's total sold amount
Total Actual CostSum of actual cost
Total Estimated CostSum of estimated cost
Cost DifferenceTotal Estimated Cost − Total Actual Cost. Shown in red when negative
Cost Difference AverageCost Difference ÷ Total Projects
Cost Difference PercentCost Difference ÷ Total Sold Amount
Total LossesSum of (estimated − actual cost) over the projects that cost more than estimated
Total Losses Project PercentTotal Losses ÷ Total Sold Amount
Avg. Project SizeTotal Sold Amount ÷ Total Projects
Estimated Margin(Total Sold − Total Estimated Cost) ÷ Total Sold, across all projects together
Actual Margin(Total Sold − Total Actual Cost) ÷ Total Sold, across all projects together
Margin DifferenceActual Margin − Estimated Margin
Performance RatioProjects that came in at or under their estimated cost : projects that cost more. A range where every job came in on budget reads like 12:0
Performance RateThe share of projects that came in at or under their estimated cost. Higher is better

The margins are worked out across all projects together, so a large project counts for more than a small one, as it does in the cost totals.

note

Before October 2026, Performance Rate counted the projects that cost more than estimated, the opposite of its label. It now counts the ones that came in at or under, so the figure for the same range is 100% minus what it used to show.
